The North Tarrant Express will be open and fully operational on Saturday, October 4th. This 13.3-mile, $2.5 billion highway reconstruction project, which will nearly double the road capacity throughout the I-820 corridor, has been completed an impressive nine months ahead of schedule. In addition to greatly enhancing the corridor and improving mobility for drivers, the reconstruction project is attracting new businesses to the corridor, as well as providing enhanced opportunities to current business in Northeast Tarrant County.
The project began in late 2010 and has included the complete reconstruction of expanded frontage lanes and main lanes and the addition of new TEXpress managed lanes that allow drivers to maintainan approximate speed of 50 MPH.
Drivers will still have the option to travel along the newly rebuilt general highway lanes and frontage roads at no charge, or enter the TEXpress Lanes at a demand-dependent toll rate. Sensors along the roadway will continuously transmit information about the traffic in each segment allowing tolls will be recalibrated as often as every five minutes. As traffic levels and demand increase, the toll price changes to keep vehicles moving. Once traffic volumes drop, the price goes down. During the first 6 months following the opening, a fixed variable schedule with higher rates during rush hours will apply. After this period, demand-based congestion-management pricing will be implemented to keep the lanes moving at 50 mph or faster. Exact toll prices after the first 6 months of an opening are difficult to predict since they are based on real-time traffic demand. Average toll prices may range from 10 cents to 25 cents per mile during lighter traffic, and 45 cents to 75 cents per mile during rush hour.
TEXpress lanes will also act as HOV lanes, giving Motorcycles and vehicles with 2+ passengers are eligible to receive 50% rush-hour discounts in managed lanes from 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday only. Drivers must activate their HOV status at www.DriveOnTEXpress.com at least 15 minutes prior to entering the TEXpress lane. Drivers can also schedule your HOV status up to 7 days in advance.
